Are you struggling right now? Has depression quietly crept in again and made itself at home in your life or have you experienced a life change that has triggered its arrival? If you are a person who has suffered from depression throughout your life, you are familiar with the signs when it shows up: low energy, lack of motivation, permeating sadness, a feeling of hopelessness. Even when things are going well for you on the surface, depression can still come around and mess with you. There have been solid years where I never experienced anything more than a day or two of feeling a little blue, and I almost thought perhaps I was over my depression. Maybe I built such a happy life that depression would have no room in it, I would start to believe. But then, depression would show up on my doorstep like an unwanted houseguest and a demand to stay with me awhile.
A New Tool for the Toolbox
I have been struggling with it again since the beginning of the year, and it’s been hard to admit to myself or to the world. Many amazing things have happened this year and I should feel on top of the world, yet I am often feeling disconnected, down and struggling to shine. There are days where I can rally and thoroughly enjoy my life, like teaching a workshop or attending an event, but then I come home and my light begins to feel like it’s fading again. So I am building a new toolbox in this season and creating tools that have the power to help comfort me. A few weeks ago I introduced the Self Care Challenge in order to force myself to try and do ONE thing for myself each day. Today I am introducing my newest FREE tool, 40 Scriptures for Battling Depression.
Look up each scripture on the checklist printable and write them out in a notebook, your planner or an insert like this one (shown below). You can write out one scripture a day, five a day, whatever number you like. Use different bible translations to read each one (BibleGateway.com is great for this). I personally love and use the New King James Version of the bible for its beautiful, poetic language and The Amplified bible for expanding my understanding of the verses.
How to Use Your New Tool
Now I know that most days you definitely won’t have the energy to feel like you are up for a battle, and that’s okay. Consider this printable your personal checklist of God’s promises to you and what you can focus on when the struggle is real. Try to write out at least one scripture each day. Read it out loud to yourself over and over, hearing the words and try to imagine for a moment that Jesus sits beside you as you read them. He is with you, even in the midst of your storm, your sadness, your feelings of disconnection.
You can also pray these scriptures back to God during your prayer time, and/or write them out on index cards and tape them around the house and your desk/space at work. Tape one to your dashboard in your car, in your planner, and on your bathroom mirror. Surround yourself with His word. When you are in the pit, seeing the word of God is like a beam of light in the darkness.
Here is my absolute favorite scripture at the moment for the battle that I hope will encourage you. Repeat each line out loud and let the words permeate your soul:
The Lord is my strength, my personal bravery, and my invincible army; He makes my feet like hinds’ feet and will make me walk [not to stand still in terror, but to walk] and make my [spiritual] progress upon my high places of trouble. Habakkuk 3:19 Amplified Bible Version
I hope this printable blesses you! Keep up the good fight and know that this storm shall pass.
*If you are in a truly dark place mentally and emotionally and are considering hurting yourself or others, please seek medical help. Contact your physician, a crisis center, or just dial 911. Depression is often temporary but when you are inside the storm it may not feel that way. Please reach out to professional help if this is the case.
